How the Tax Calculator Works

This calculator estimates income tax and mandatory social contributions for employees across six countries. It applies each country's official tax brackets, deductions, and social insurance rates for the 2024/2025 tax year, then shows a full breakdown of gross income, every deduction, and your net take-home pay.

What is included

  • Income tax - federal/national progressive or flat rates with country-specific allowances
  • Social contributions - Social Security, Medicare, National Insurance, health and pension insurance
  • Effective and marginal tax rates - so you can see your real tax burden and the rate on your next dollar earned

Important limitations

FAQ

What is the difference between effective and marginal tax rate?
Your marginal tax rate is the rate applied to your next dollar of income - the top bracket you fall into. Your effective tax rate is the average rate you actually pay across all brackets, deductions, and contributions combined. The effective rate is always lower than the marginal rate.
Does this calculator include employer contributions?
No. This calculator shows only the employee-side deductions from gross salary. Employers pay additional social contributions (e.g., 7.65% FICA in the US, similar employer social insurance in EU countries) that are not deducted from your paycheck but do add to total labor costs.
Why does the US calculator include FICA separately?
FICA (Federal Insurance Contributions Act) covers Social Security (6.2% up to $168,600) and Medicare (1.45%, plus 0.9% over $200,000). These are payroll taxes separate from federal income tax, so we break them out so you can see each component.
Are the tax rates up to date?
Rates reflect the 2024/2025 tax year for each country. Tax laws change frequently - always verify with your country's tax authority before filing. This tool is for estimation and education only.
Can I use this for self-employment income?
Partially. Self-employed individuals usually pay both the employee and employer portions of social contributions (e.g., 15.3% SECA in the US vs. 7.65% FICA), and may deduct business expenses. This calculator assumes employment income only.
